Living a long healthy life is one that has your brain in mind. Your brain is an organ that can develop and change over time. It is also like a muscle that can get stronger and work harder for you.
A great rule for maintaining a healthy brain is to remember, “What’s good for your heart is good for your brain.” In order to maintain or even improve your brain health at any age, focus on these 4 key areas:
- Sleep 7-8 hours every night
- Eat a healthy diet and drink 6-8 glasses of water per day
- Engage in physical activity daily
- Stay socially engaged
Examples of these may include:
- Setting a sleep schedule and developing a routine to prepare for bed,
- Reducing excess sugars such as in sodas or sweets and eating meals with colorful fruits and vegetables
- Move more, aim for 20 active minutes per day and stand up every hour for 12 daytime hours
- Plan ahead to attend activities outside of your home with family and friends
