Your Participation Has
Never Been So Important!

Alzheimer’s disease has negatively affected our loved ones, our families, and our communities for far too long. Will you stand with us against this dreadful disease?

There is so much that we don’t know about Alzheimer’s disease and aging in minority communities. If you are a Black American and do not have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, we need your help to learn more about the disease.

Your participation in this project will help researchers gain a better understanding of the reasons why some Black Americans are at a higher risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease.

We hope to learn more about factors that may contribute to memory loss in Black American populations and factors that may serve as a protection against the disease.

What we learn from this project will help researchers in the future better understand how to treat the disease and, hopefully, one day, how to cure it.

The time has come for us to move beyond hoping for a change and towards finding a way to prevent, stop or cure the disease.

It only takes one and starts with you! Thank you again for your participation in this very important initiative.

Sincerely,

Black American United
Memory and Aging Project Team

The Black American United Memory and Aging Project

What is the Black American Memory and Aging Project (BA-UMAP) About?

The Black American-United Memory and Aging Project (BA-UMAP) was developed to identify social, cultural, behavioral, environmental, and biological factors that may affect our memory as we age and put some people at a greater risk for memory loss.

Did you know that Alzheimer’s disease is the 4th leading cause of death among older Black Americans?

This is particularly alarming given that Black Americans:

  1. Are two times more likely to develop late-onset Alzheimer’s disease,
  2. Are diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, and
  3. They present with greater memory impairment when they see a doctor and are diagnosed at later disease stages compared to whites.

Because there is currently no cure, the number of African-Americans and their families affected by the disease will undoubtedly rise.  The time for ACTION is NOW!

IN THE KNOW!

Learn about brain health
and ways to stay Healthy

Many factors influence healthy aging. Some of these, like genetics, are not in our control. Others — like exercise, diet, and taking care of our mental health — are within our reach, and we can do something about them.

We highlight our
BA-UMAP researchers

The BA-UMAP team consists of devoted researchers who want to make a difference and who care! Our Principle Investigator is Dr. Travonia Brown-Hughes! This month we are highlighting Dr. Brown-Hughes and her work. Click the button to learn more about Travonia.
